Do you think this is weird?

whenever my mom's stepson misbehaves she makes him write. he is 8 years old and my mom even has a chart with the offense and how much he has to write. and she also has a box with a bunch of topics that no kids like to write about that he has to pick out. but i was kinda shocked when she told him to write a paragraph for lieing today. what do you think of this? i think its actually a creative way but it will also make him see writing as a punishment.
